Dorin Cretu

(b. 1956, Brașov)

Dorin Cretu is a Romanian artist representative for the '80s generation of visual artists; he’s been living and working in Paris since 1990. Author of paintings and graphics caught between figurative and abstract, Cretu uses ahighly individual technique in creating geometric and floral motifs with a transparent-reflective quality and enigmatic movement effects. He took part in numerous exhibitions in Paris, London, Cracow and Taipei. In Romania, he had an important retrospective exhibition at Mogoşoaia Palace Cultural Centre, later shown at the Constanţa Art Museum (2008-2009).His works were acquired by the French National Contemporary Art Fund (FNAC) and by the National Museum of Contemporary Art of Romania for its permanent collection. He lives and works in Paris, and since 2011 has been represented by AnnArt Gallery, where he had a solo show (Painting in 2013) and seven group exhibitions.

Dorin Cretu also has this aesthetical courage to seek for rare essences using traditional tools. He avoids fads (visual and technological) because he has an instinctive dislike of the facile. For him, art makes sense only if it resorts to that (discreet, but visible) alphabet of the inner turmoil, an alphabet which only contains letters of nobility.

(Matei Vișniec)

Dorin Cretu left the byzantine space carrying along with him a type of chromatic asceticism, refreshed gradually with the presence of a plastic paste mist, laid down in emulsions. He tenaciously practiced the refusal of figural, as a resistance to postmodernist amalgam, finding himself plunged in the stimulus carousel of a metropolis like Paris. Painting descendant from Malevich’s supremacism, it becomes subtly sensual through it’s rappel to vegetal imagery. The familiar image, attached via memories of the flower, becomes, in fact, meditation upon the interior space.

(Aurelia Mocanu)

Probably what joins Dorin Cretu’s work with the great artworks of contemporary art is their apparently effortless ability to construct a world of their own, freestanding, opened to the hedonistic, as well as to the reflexive gaze. His paintings seem to have a double instruction guide: by being visually seductive and subterraneanly-misterious, they can guide us into pure and serene contemplation, into the joy of self-forgetting; in the same time, towards restlessness and incertitude about our own journey, of self-discovery. One lucky day, we might feel the two paths becoming one.

(Gabriela Massaci)

As stylistic positioning, we can say that Dorin Cretu’s painting is a melange of affinities, expressionist-abstract and minimalist, reborn in the silence and meditation oasis, created in his Parisian studio.
