Maia Stefana Oprea

(b. Bucharest, Romania)

She's a graduate of the National University of Arts in Bucharest, Painting Department – BFA (2012) and MFA (2015), and winner of scholarships for graduate studies in France (Grenoble - Ecole Nationale Superieure d’Art de Grenoble și Strasbourg - Haute Ecole des Arts du Rhin) and the United States of America (Savannah College of Art and Design). She is interested in the dynamic interaction between painting, sculpture, photography, video and performance. Her creative process deals with abstraction, dissimulated narratives, the dissolution of time, consumerism and the aesthetics of co-presence. Maia had numerous solo exhibitions in Bucharest (AnnArt Gallery, Signum Gallery, Metropolis Center, Melenia Art Gallery, Ministery of Foreign Affairs) and overseas (Italy: ICR Venice, UK: ICR London, Liverpool, Savannah, Bulgaria: Ruse, Tunisia: Monastir). Also, she participated in many collective national exhibitions (AnnArt Gallery, Anca Poterașu Gallery, Colony Art, Romanian Peasant’s Museum, The Ark Center, Anaid Gallery) and international ones (Painting Biennial in Chișinău, Biennial of Contemporary Art in Lyon, Watercolour Biennial in Belgrade). Notable awards are Matei Brancoveanu Award for Visual Arts, in 2017, AnnArt Foundation Award 2016 and the special prize "Global Art Award" (Prishtina, Kosovo) in 2013. Her artistic interest in the nomadism and mobility themes is a constant in her work, enhanced by her participation in art residences and creative camps at various locations: Kosovo, India, Tunisia, Albania, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Poland, Aiud, Borsec, Breaza. At AnnArt gallery she was featured with two solo exhibition, Stacking, in 2016 and Locus Neminis II, in 2018.
