Mircea Novac

(b. 1954, Butoieşti, Mehedinţi)

Maurice Mircea Novac is a representative artist for the 80s generation, he graduated the Art High School of Craiova and the “Nicolae Grigorescu” Fine Arts Institute, with a major in Monumental Painting, with Simona Chintilă as his coordinating professor.

His first exhibition takes places at the Art Museum in Craiova in 1983. In the early 90s, he leaves the country and settles for a while in Germany, the The Netherlands (Masstricht). Until his return to Romania in 1996, the artist has a series of exhibitions and participations in art fairs in countries such as Belgium, England, Venezuela, Columbia, the USA, and his works can be found in private collections around the world.

Maurice Novac's painting unintentionally becomes a kind of history of the image, which includes iconographic myths - the ruins and the stylistic landscape of romanticism, the feeling of loneliness and emptiness, of metaphysical nature, or the detailed description of motifs, to the limit of hyper realistic hallucination, - and the cultural stratifications that make the difference in reception and taste. In a way, the painter builds his own world from all historical conventions, which he judges, implicitly, by reuse or elimination, and in the next sequence, after everything has been put in its place and the whole begins to function, this new construction becomes both a utopia and a trap.

 (Pavel Şuşară)

The artist finds his energy based in a serious remaking of the figurative, akin to the exigency of an erudite, reconfiguring his route through intense work on the image he must regenerate.
