Francisc Chiuariu

b. 1966, Sibiu, Romania

Francisc Chiuariu is one of the most significant contemporary Romanian painters that emerged right after the fall of the communist regime. A representative of the present directions in painting, Chiuariu studied with Professor Florin Ciubotaru at the National University of Arts in Bucharest, where he also taught between 1993 and 2000. The artist has developed a unique creative identity, distinctive with its mixture of traditional media and unconventional materials, techniques or surfaces. In his artistic practice he combines on multiple levels photorealism with neoexpressionism, acrylic with typographic ink, urban iconographies with abstract areas. His works have spotted attention in local auctions, reaching a strong, stable price, as well as in exhibitions in Moscow, Liverpool or Tel-Aviv, and are held in private collections from Romania, France, Russia, Switzerland, Israel, Canada, Austria and South Africa. He lives and works in Bucharest, where he has been represented by AnnArt Gallery since 2011, with four personal exhibitions (Shadows in 2012, The Circle Theory in 2013, View from Above in 2016 and Eye of the Storm in 2018), six group ones and a presence at ArtVienna 2017.

Francisc Chiuariu is one of the most interesting Romanian painters of the last two decades. He came out on the artistic stage around mid ‘90s. Productive, dynamic, provocative and innovative with his working techniques, he navigates, through his series, on the ‘meridians’ and ‘parallels’ of human condition with restless curiosity and fascination towards this universe of The Being who was gifted with feelings as well as with thought.

(Adrian Guță)

After 2009, Francisc Chiuariu sought and conquered a new dimension of painting. Not exactly the handiest of them: the third dimension, as collage-relief or picto-object. With a strong optico-sensorial impact through supporting technical effects: artificial light conjugated to paint stratification is the artist’s laboratory innovation, diverse and productive in two decades.

(Aurelia Mocanu)

By simplifying composition, by reducing it to minimum essential, Francisc Chiuariu is showing now his skilful manner to compose the balance between ultrarealistic figurative of the character and the fluid abstraction of exquisitely coloured backgrounds, sometimes blurred, some other times distilling painted gestures with romantic emotional load, or the virtuosity with which he controls the relationship, intense and essential for him, between shiny and matte.
